On February 01, 2017, members of Nigeria Youth 4 Peace Initiative (NY4PI) embarked on a courtesy visit to the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Lagos, Nigeria. The visit was part of efforts of the youth organisation at fostering and strengthening effective partnerships towards the domestication of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2250 and how youth participation in countering violent extremism and building peace can be enhanced in Nigeria.
Mr Kayanja, Country Director, UNIC Lagos who welcomed the visitors to the Centre appreciated Nigeria Youth 4 Peace Initiative for the leadership exemplified towards the domestication of UNSCR 250 in Nigeria. He emphasized that the organization was one of the very few organisations working on creating awareness and advocating for the implementation of UNSCR 2250 in Nigeria.
Mr Seyi Soremekun, National Officer, UNIC Lagos who corroborated Mr Kayanja appreciated the efforts of Nigeria Youth 4 Peace Initiative in leading the campaign and finding the Information Centre a worthy partner in the domestication of UNSCR 2250 in Nigeria. He argued that implementing the resolution in Nigeria is not an option but a priority for Nigeria given her increasing youth population.
Lawal Rafiu Adeniran, National Coordinator, Nigeria Youth 4 Peace Initiative who led other members of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 Monitoring Group, emphasized that UNSCR 2250 will remain just a document until it is translated into reality at local, state and national levels. He argues that its implementation therefore needs meaningful partnerships between youth, governments, local and international organisations, media and other relevant stakeholders.
The visit ended with a renewed commitment and partnership towards ensuring that adequate awareness is done and government acts on the resolution.
